Pursuing "Nagoyanes
Guiding to "Newness",
One-of-a-kind Christmas decorations
'KITTE Nagoya,' a commercial facility that conveys the charm of Nagoya, bringing together unique restaurants and shops offering high-quality items. Its symbol is the atrium, which welcomes visitors and serves as the center of movement within the building. It is an open, multi-story space from the first to the third floor, with a ceiling height of approximately 17 meters. Benches are also installed, where people can be seen waiting for others or taking a break between shopping. Despite its location directly connected to Nagoya Station, it is slightly removed from the hustle and bustle of the station front, exuding a calm atmosphere.
This atrium is also utilized as an event space, hosting various events throughout the year. Among them, the Christmas event is one we put special effort into.
Yusuke Furuya of JP Building Management Co., Ltd., which operates KITTE, explains the reason: "The Christmas season is a great opportunity to attract visitors who don't normally use KITTE Nagoya. We want them to become fans during this time. However, there are many facilities in the vicinity exhibiting wonderful Christmas trees, so we always aim to differentiate ourselves by creating trees and decorations that are unique to KITTE Nagoya."
Therefore, in recent years, general fir trees have not been adopted, and creative decorations taking advantage of the atrium's high ceiling have been deployed.
NOMURA MEDIAS has been in charge of KITTE Nagoya's Christmas decorations for three consecutive years since 2023.
In 2023, fabric dyed with unused ingredients was adopted. The symbol tree "Delight Tree," with its beautiful natural colors, adorned the atrium space with a gentle light. In 2024, the "SYNC LINK TREE" was installed, allowing visitors to change the tree's color through digital devices. This interactive giant tree attracted attention.
And in 2025, abandoning the stereotype that "Christmas means a tree," we deployed a dynamic aurora illumination. A magical production, just like a Christmas miracle, welcomed visitors.
In addition, incorporating the latest AI technology, when people ring handbells installed in the second-floor passageway, the AI analyzes the tones and diagnoses "your unique color." The interactive installation, where the entire aurora changes to that color, attracted attention, and many people stopped to enjoy their own personalized Christmas illumination.
"The concept of KITTE Nagoya is 'Nagoya's essence and newness.' NOMURA MEDIAS provides challenging and new Christmas proposals every year. We are always surprised by the content, so we look forward to their proposals," said Mr. Furuya.
Gentle, nature-derived light enhances the space.
2023, infused with a message on food issues
We asked Mr. Furuya about the reason for choosing NOMURA MEDIAS as a partner. "In the 2023 competition, they proposed using fabric dyed with discarded vegetables and fruits for decorations, and I was drawn to their planning ability. It was a time when the facility was strongly conscious of SDGs, and it perfectly overlapped with the theme we wanted to communicate to our customers. I wanted to work with them because they had a completely different perspective from other companies and were challenging."
The theme of the 2023 Christmas event proposed by NOMURA MEDIAS was "DELIGHT CHRISTMAS - A Christmas of Joy and Radiance." It conveyed the joy of gathering with loved ones, exchanging smiles and conversations, and spending time together, while also drawing attention to the challenges in "food," the symbol of "gathering," with the hope of brightening the future.
Junko Yamashita, the designer involved in the planning at the time, looks back on it as follows.
'First, we thoroughly discussed the concept of 'Nagoya-ness,' one of KITTE Nagoya's core concepts, among the members. During this discussion, we not only recognized the appeal of Nagoya's rich food culture but also identified issues such as the low vegetable intake among citizens and food loss. KITTE Nagoya has many restaurants, and many customers visit to enjoy meals. We thought that as such a facility, we could provide information and experiences that serve as a catalyst for cherishing food.'
The "FOOD TEXTILE" developed by the local company Toyoshima Co., Ltd. was adopted for the lantern. This is a sustainable fabric dyed using unused parts of fruits and vegetables, which were previously discarded, as dye. It is characterized by its gentle, natural colors and was thought to help promote the appeal of Nagoya's craftsmanship. On the other hand, various challenges arose during the actual production of the tree.
"FOOD TEXTILE" is usually used for clothing and accessories, and this was the first attempt to use it for spatial decoration. The production proceeded through coordination with the manufacturer, including whether it could be treated with flame-retardant processing, which is essential for display. Additionally, it was necessary to accommodate the ceiling's load capacity, and the team continued to consider how to make it more visually appealing while meeting the conditions by creating origami miniatures.
Account producer Masachika Washo also recalled the difficulties at the time, saying, "We received a request to increase the number of lantern tiers to ensure the tree's height, but due to weight restrictions, we had to fundamentally rethink the structure. We repeatedly experimented to make the materials lighter and flame-retardant, and I believe it was a decoration that was miraculously realized."
Accordingly, the joy upon completion was immense, and Mr. Furuya says his emotion upon seeing the tree remains vivid to this day.
"I was first overwhelmed by the scale, and the gentle atmosphere and luxury perfectly matched the space at KITTE Nagoya. I was truly moved when I first saw the light-up show. The balance between the music and light effects was also wonderful, and it remains an unforgettable memory."
Only possible in this place
A special Christmas experience.
2024, when visitors connected the light
In 2024, under the theme "SYNC LINK CHRISTMAS: A Christmas Where Lights Connect," we proposed a Christmas event that emphasized the visitor's "experience."
The key item used, "SHAKE SYNC," is a block-shaped educational toy that changes color when shaken, and its unique feature is that two blocks can exchange light when brought close together. This is also the first time it has been used for spatial decoration and illumination. The aim is to transform the traditionally "passive experience" of Christmas illuminations and light-up shows into an "active experience" where visitors themselves become the triggers for the display.
"Since the original shape of the toy is a rhombus, combining that shape as a motif with holograms resulted in a colorful and highly original design," says Yamashita.
Furthermore, we have prepared an interactive feature where the colors of light chosen by visitors interacting with "SHAKE SYNC" connect to a large tree. "We installed the trigger devices on the second-floor walkway where the atrium tree is clearly visible. We were excited from the planning stage, imagining that this would be a special experience that could only happen here. We worked through trial and error to bring this plan to reality, including system construction."
However, because this item uses an infrared signal widely used in automatic doors and remote controls to change colors, it reportedly caused unintended reactions at times.
Washo, who was also in charge of equipment maintenance during the event, spoke about the hardships and joys: "I periodically checked the equipment during the period to see if there were any problems and made adjustments as needed. While maintenance was tough, it's also the kind of fun you can only have on-site. It was rewarding to show customers how it lights up and explain it to them, and they were very happy, which made me happy too."
Yamashita said, "When challenging new things, troubles are bound to happen, but I feel that we are able to convey a sense of security because Washo takes the lead and makes solid adjustments." Furuya also said, "It's not just about finishing the decorations; they manage them thoroughly during the event period and respond immediately if anything happens, so we are truly at ease."
Also, the lighting ceremony, which had not been held for the past few years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, was revived this year. "We created a large SHAKE SYNC for the lighting ceremony. We designed it to embody the theme of the event, with the idea that the lights held by children and participants would connect, transfer to the large SHAKE SYNC, and then illuminate the entire tree," says Yamashita. "It was a ceremony where children were the stars, with many families attending, and it was more successful than ever before," recalls Furuya.
The glamour of the holiday season
2025, expressed through music and color
In 2025, we took a step forward into an even more challenging initiative of "Christmas decorations not bound by trees." That is the aurora illumination introduced at the beginning.
The 2025 Christmas event, themed "Music of Aurolights: A Christmas Where the World is Colored by Music," created a dynamic aurora world with a bold design that extended from the atrium to the second-floor walkway, rather than focusing solely on the atrium as in previous years. To ensure the aurora's colors changed beautifully, various types of fabrics were tested for the decorations. Ultimately, a combination of light-reflecting and translucent materials was used to create a deep, shimmering light effect.
The placement of lighting and the number of installed decorations were repeatedly verified inside the store day after day after closing, and adjustments were made until the very end while checking the balance on the construction day itself.
Furthermore, the centerpiece, an AI-powered interactive installation, utilizes "StripeTrack" by the artist collective "knoctave." This cutting-edge AI system visualizes music rhythms and scales, and it was realized by adapting it for spatial decoration, something usually developed as art or fashion items.
Planner Yumi Sakamoto states that the background of incorporating the interactive installation was built on past accumulation.
Actually, at the 2023 Christmas event, we also set up a participatory art corner where visitors could create art by placing round stickers. It was very popular, so much so that the stickers we had prepared ran out quickly. Therefore, in 2024, we focused on the visitors' 'experience' and incorporated a 'connecting light' concept, which was very well received. We feel the importance of interactive elements that allow direct experience, such as the AI installation in 2025 and other experiential triggers and stage events that are being widely posted on social media.
Furthermore, regarding 'music,' one of the themes for 2025, Sakamoto said, 'Listening to music can move our emotions, and even in the same place, the atmosphere can change, right? Music is indispensable for Christmas decorations. I wanted to express the experience of the world becoming more vibrant through music, using the aurora.' During the event period, a light-up show offering a harmony of music and beautiful colors is held 10 times daily at fixed times. The music for the show, as well as the background music during regular hours, was produced originally while considering the balance with the illuminations.
Music creating a Christmas mood further enhanced the sense of immersion into the beautifully changing colorful world of aurora, captivating the visitors.
Finally, Mr. Furuya spoke again about the three-year relationship with NOMURA MEDIAS. "NOMURA MEDIAS understands the branding and concept of KITTE Nagoya thoroughly and makes new proposals. That attitude is the biggest reason we've worked together for three years. We receive proposals that are already 100% complete at the presentation stage, but I believe we have a relationship where we can enhance them together to 150% or 200% completion."
Washo also said, "I always make challenging proposals, so honestly, the difficulty level is really high. Although there are many difficult aspects, I find the fun and appeal in solving problems together." He also mentioned that they are increasingly receiving comments from local residents and other facilities, such as, "KITTE Nagoya always has good Christmas decorations."
In June 2026, KITTE Nagoya celebrated its 10th anniversary. Reflecting on that, Mr. Furuya concluded as follows.
This year marks a significant milestone, so we want to express our gratitude to everyone who has been involved with us so far, and we hope to build another new year with the feeling of "Thank you for your continued support for the next 10 years." We have various plans scheduled as usual in August and December, including our 10th-anniversary event in June, so we would love for many people to visit and experience the "newness" of KITTE Nagoya."
"Illuminations that color the Christmas season gorgeously. Their radiance is not just decoration, but light that warmly illuminates the hearts of people passing through the city and is etched into memories. Therefore, the challenge of KITTE Nagoya and NOMURA MEDIAS continues, with hearts united to deliver something better."
